  1. Macmillan Dictionary for Children 
  2. First Multimedia Edition

  5. This file contains some last minute information about 
  6. installing and using the Multimedia Edition of the 
  7. Dictionary. We suggest reading all of this file before 
  8. installing the dictionary.

  12. Using the dictionary on a machine with 2 megabytes of 
  13. memory.
  14.  
  15. Although the dictionary will run in only 2 megabytes of 
  16. memory, like many Windows and Multimedia applications 
  17. it will run quite slowly. We recommend that at least 
  18. 4 megabytes of memory be installed in the machine.
  19. In standard mode with 2 megabytes of memory, "out 
  20. of memory" messages may be encountered after using 
  21. the dictionary for a while. In particular, "out of 
  22. memory" messages may occur while playing some of 
  23. the games. If this message appears, exit the dictionary 
  24. and restart it. The games may then be reentered directly 
  25. from the opening screen and played for some time before 
  26. the error message appears again.

  28. We recommend that the 386 Enhanced mode of Windows 
  29. be used.

  31. There are a couple of features that will definitely not work 
  32. on a 2 megabyte machine. The opening animated title sequence 
  33. will not play; the main dictionary screen appears instead. 
  34. The Guided Tour will start but probably will not finish to 
  35. the end. To get an overview of what is in the dictionary, 
  36. print out the file called TOUR.TXT on the CD. This file 
  37. can be used as a script for a tour through the dictionary. 
  38. Also, Help provides guidance through the dictionary and 
  39. can be used at any point.

  43. The Multimedia Dictionary uses only the standard VGA 
  44. 16 colors and will therefore run on any VGA monitor. We 
  45. have found that the dictionary runs much faster using a 
  46. 16-color VGA driver instead of a 256-color driver. If the 
  47. dictionary is running slowly, try switching to a plain 
  48. VGA driver. Also, the Opening Animated Title Sequence will 
  49. not play if the machine is running in 256-color mode.

  53. If you are using a CD ROM drive that does not operate at 
  54. the required transfer rate of 150K/bytes per second, the 
  55. animation sequences will have pauses in the visual and 
  56. sound playback. If, during installation, "yes" was chosen 
  57. for the option that uses some of the hard disk for the 
  58. dictionary, the animation files will run off the hard disk 
  59. which should eliminate the problem.
